My favourite definition of hypnosis is that it is a safe and natural phenomenon which we are all familiar with although we may not realise it. It is similar to the dreamy state that we find ourselves in when we daydream or meditate. We have an awareness of background noises but we are in our 'own little space' and are just totally relaxed - knowing that we can come back to full consciousness when we are ready or are disturbed.

Hypnotherapy - is the application of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes and is recognised as a powerful aid in the medical world. Today it is used for everything from anxiety disorders to stress management, to dentistry, childbirth and other areas where pain control is needed. It has also been proven that the subconscious mind can help the body to develop a greater resistance to infection and improve recovery time.

IS IT SAFE ?

Yes absolutely - there are no known records of anyone having been physically or mentally harmed as a direct result of hypnosis itself. Hypnotherapy is practised in the light trance state and you are fully aware of what is going on - the hypnotherapist does not control your mind ! Hypnotherapy, is a two-way process which requires your co-operation - the client and practitioner work together to re-programme your thought processes. We have belief systems which we adhere to and if anything inappropriate was suggested, the critical faculties of the conscious mind would not allow it and you would come out of hypnosis at will.

HOW DOES HYPNOSIS WORK ?

There are four primary brain wave patterns - BETA, ALPHA, THETA and DELTA. We spend most of our working time in the Beta state, where we are alert and capable of critical thought. We frequently switch from this to the Alpha state, although we are often not aware of it. The Alpha state is a state of serenity, relaxation and detached concentration. We are in the Theta state at least twice a day - usually in the morning just as we awaken or when we are on the brink of sleep. This is the state in which people are at their most creative, producing ideas and solutions to problems. The Theta state also activates the relaxation response in the body which causes the muscles to relax and the heart rate and breathing to slow down and work at their natural rhythms. The Delta state comes only with deep sleep. In this state we process information through our dreams. It is the period of rejuvenation and cell renewal.
The most useful states for hypnotherapy are ALPHA and THETA. When both body and mind come together in these states, you have a relaxed and calm mind. It is then more receptive to the suggestions that you make.
In the hypnotic state, the conscious mind recedes and the subconscious mind comes to the fore. To achieve this state it helps to become completely relaxed in both mind and body - only then can you communicate directly with your unconscious mind.

WHAT IS CURATIVE HYPNOTHERAPY ?

Curative hypnosis is of great value in therapeutic work and often success can be achieved where
other methods have failed. The scope of hypnotic treatment is almost limitless in its effectiveness in
the treatment of phobias, traumas, fears and anxieties of all kinds.

WHAT IS REGRESSION AND HYPNO-ANALYSIS ?

REGRESSION - enables the client to re-evaluate events from their past and gain a better perspective of them. During age regression, you relive your past not as a memory but as though you were there experiencing the event again. In cases of child abuse, regression can have tremendous value as it motivates recall of childhood memories and traumas which can be dealt with. Sometimes regression can go further back into past lives dealing with situations which are still causing difficulty in the present.
