In
India, massage is part of family life and parent and grandparents
massage their babies and children as well as each other on a
regular basis. It is often called 'Champissage' after the original
Indian word 'Champi' meaning to massage. It is based on the
ancient Ayurvedic healing system and has been practised in India
for over a thousand years.
Mothers believed that by massaging the scalp with oils and herbs
that this would help to prevent scalp disorders, would make
the hair grow thick and strong and boost brain power. They believed
from as far back as nearly 4,000 years ago that regular massage
with herbs, spices and aromatic oils would encourage the body's
own healing ability, as well as strengthening muscles and firming
the skin. Different oils were used according to the season such
as coconut, sesame, almond, olive oil, buttermilk, mustard oil,
herbal oils and henna.

Often the women would sit together and massage one another at
the same time as part of their grooming routine to encourage
healthy strong and shiny hair. However, men also enjoyed a head
massage as it became part of their grooming when their barber
gave them a haircut. Royalty even employed their own personal
masseurs.
As the children grow up, they learn all the different techniques
and start to give massages themselves from about the age of
six thus the tradition continues through the generations. You
can also borrow this custom by gathering together some family
members , and not only will your family's health improve, but
also the relationship as it gives to time to bond and chat as
you relax
.got to start them young though !!
In the West, the traditional head massage has now evolved to
become Indian Head Massage - a treatment for the scalp, face,
neck and shoulders, and upper arms. There are so many health
benefits to this treatment as well as being so pleasurable !!
Will
I have to undress?
Indian head massage uses some Swedish massage and acupressure
techniques which focuses on the upper body, face and scalp. You
can have your treatment fully clothed sitting in a chair without
the use of oils, or with a towelling robe in order to use oils
or cream. However, you can also have the treatment lying down
with aromatic oils especially chosen for deep relaxation and muscular
pain. I offer a stress buster 2 hour treatment which incorporates
the lying down form where I give a relaxing back, neck and scalp
massage before turning over to receive more massage to the neck,
shoulders, face and scalp - from there, I continue with some Reiki
.most
people fall asleep !!
THE
BENEFITS OF INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Physical benefits
*
Improved functioning of the circulatory system - improved flow
of blood carrying oxygen and nutrients around the body. Also regulates
heartbeat and reduces high blood pressure.
*
Stimulates the lymphatic system - helps to dispel waste products
and toxins which boosts the immune system.
*
Relaxation of the muscular system - excellent for easing those
aches and pains from stress, driving and working on the computer.
*
Increased mobility - excellent for decreasing stiffness and increasing
flexibility in the neck and shoulder area.
*
Relief from tension headaches and eye strain.
*
Promotion of hair growth - increased blood flow encourages growth
and improves the condition of the hair.
*
Healthier looking skin - sweat and sebaceous glands are stimulated
and waste products eliminated which improves the texture, colour,
condition and tone of the skin. Some people feel that they look
younger and have a 'glow' after regular treatments
.especially
the stress buster one with the aromatherapy essential oils. This
is because the muscles of the face are relaxed instead of our
'usual frown!'
Psychological benefits
*
Relief from stress and tension. * A deep state of relaxation.
* Improved concentration.
* Lifting of depression and raising of self-esteem * Aids insomnia
..zzzzzzzz
Subtle,
spiritual benefits
*
Release of blockages - flow of energy known as 'chi' or 'ki' [
such as in Reiki] is released, enabling energy to flow freely
and healing to take place.
*
When I give an Indian head massage, whether a short seated one
or a longer stress buster, I always end by balancing the Chakras
to impart a sense of inner peace and harmony, as you are more
relaxed and therefore more receptive to the healing energy. It
also gives you a chance to feel 'grounded' again before going
back to work or driving home.
